Tips to Have Great Skin by 40

When I was 14 years old I was fully aware that without proper care to my skin starting at 14, I would end up looking older than I am. Well, I am 45 now and according to people, I look like I am probably in my early-30’s.

I do not know why I was so obsessed about developing a skin routine at a young age. My mother and the women around me when I was younger were not youth-obsessed women. Maybe it had to do something with all my Seventeen Magazines I read. Jotting down every tip in a binder so I could refer to it afterwards. It is amazing what we remember at a young age that continue to stick with us.

Anyway, the tips I wrote those many years ago still ring true today. Whether or not you were as committed as I was to have great skin by 40, there is still time to create and maintain a health skin care routine.

  1. Wash Your Face

Washing your face is an essential part of any skincare routine, and it offers numerous benefits for achieving a healthy and radiant complexion. Using a gentle cleanser suitable for your skin type, splashing lukewarm water onto your face, and massaging the cleanser in circular motions helps to remove dirt, excess oil, and impurities accumulated throughout the day. This process not only leaves your skin feeling refreshed but also helps to unclog pores and prevent breakouts. Furthermore, washing your face promotes better blood circulation, resulting in a natural glow. Making this simple act a daily habit ensures that your skin stays clean, vibrant, and ready to absorb the nourishing benefits of your skincare products.

I have mild rosacea and have tried many different cleansers that are gentle enough for my face. I have used Cetaphil for years and have found that it is one of the most gentle cleanser for rosacea, acne, or sensitive skin. I recommend this skin cleanser to all my friends. It is fragrance-free and hypoallergenic.

  2. Use Toner

I honestly thought toner back in the 90’s It was thought it dried out your face which caused more harm than good. However, the toner is back and updated. It is now considered an essential step in any skincare routine. It plays a crucial role in achieving a radiant and balanced complexion. This lightweight liquid, typically water-based, is formulated with a harmonious blend of ingredients to refresh and revitalize the skin. By sweeping toner across the face, it helps to remove any remaining traces of dirt, oil, or makeup that may have been missed during cleansing. Additionally, toner balances the skin's pH levels, optimizing its ability to absorb subsequent skincare products. With its hydrating and nourishing properties, toner aids in reducing the appearance of pores, promoting a smoother and more youthful texture. Regular use of a face toner leaves the skin feeling revitalized, prepped, and ready for the rest of your skincare regimen.

I have used Neutrogena’s Alcohol-Free Toner which my facialist approved. Nevertheless, your toner from 90’s is no longer present. If you do not use a toner, reconsider it.

  3. Apply SPF Moisturizer Religiously
In this era of increasing awareness about the damages of sun exposure, SPF moisturizer has become an indispensable part of any skincare routine. This multipurpose product not only keeps the skin hydrated but also offers protection from the harmful UV rays of the sun. Whether you're spending a day at the beach or simply going about your daily activities, applying SPF moisturizer is crucial for maintaining youthful and radiant skin. By acting as a shield against UVA and UVB rays, this skincare essential helps prevent premature aging, sunburns, and the risk of skin cancer. With its dual benefits of moisturizing and sun protection, SPF moisturizer is undoubtedly a key player in the pursuit of healthy and beautiful skin.

SPF moisturizer is one of the mainstays in my skin-care regimen. Oil of Olay Total Effects 7-in-1 SPF 30 is one of the best daily SPF face moisturizers. I started using this around the age of 35 and I think the effects have been impressive. Do not forget to apply your moisturizer to your ears and neck.

4. Hydrate Hydrate Hydrate

Drinking an ample amount of water is crucial for maintaining healthy and radiant skin. Our skin is the largest organ in our body, and it relies heavily on hydration to function optimally. When we are dehydrated, our skin becomes dull, dry, and more prone to wrinkles and breakouts. Water helps to flush out toxins from our body, promoting a clear complexion and reducing the risk of acne. It also aids in maintaining the skin's elasticity and suppleness, preventing the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. Additionally, staying hydrated helps to regulate oil production and balance pH levels, leaving the skin beautifully hydrated, plump, and glowing. Therefore, incorporating sufficient water intake into our daily routine is an essential step towards achieving and preserving healthy, youthful skin.

According to the Mayo Clinic (2022), men should drink up to 15.5 cups and women should drink up to 11.5 cups daily. If you are not a fan of water, you can obtain your hydration needs through consuming fruits and vegetables, such as watermelon. Beverages such as juice, milk, and herbal teas consist of water and are good water alternatives. However, sodas, energy-, and sports drinks due contain water but contain a lot of sugar. This Sahara Sailor Water bottle is a good bottle to have to keep you on track.

5. Protect Your Skin from the Sun

In my opinion, everyone’s goal should be to protect your skin from the sun. Protecting your skin from the sun is of paramount importance in maintaining its health and radiance. As the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays can lead to premature aging, sunburn, and even skin cancer, it is crucial to take preventive measures. Firstly, applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 is essential, regardless of whether it's sunny or cloudy outside. It's wise to reapply every two hours, especially if you've been swimming or sweating. Secondly, seeking shade during peak sunlight hours, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., will help minimize sun exposure. Wearing sun-protective clothing, such as hats, sunglasses, and long-sleeved shirts, safeguards your skin from direct sunlight. Lastly, staying hydrated not only nurtures your skin from within but also assists in maintaining your overall health. Prioritizing these precautions ensures that your skin remains safe, preventing any long-term damage caused by the sun's rays. By being proactive, you can enjoy the outdoors while keeping your skin beautifully protected.

Sun hats, sun protective shirt, sunscreen lotion, and sunglasses are the essential to have if you plan on relaxing in the sun. The above products are my recommendations and my favorite products. As I said before, it is never too late to start using a sun protective skin care routine.
